PostSubject: Misconceptions of Satanism   8/5/2013, 7:55 pm

I hope this topic is allowed here, if not I will quickly remove this post.
This article is in no way trying to convert people or deny their faith's general opinions or thoughts about Satanism. My main goal by originally writing this was to shed some light and let people know not all Satanists want to chop off goats' heads and drink bat blood.

Satanism is considered by some to be a very old practice or set of practices. Seeing as one could say Christianity is a fairly young religion, specifically Catholicism (being one of the oldest forms) one could also say Satanism didn't spawn from Christianity as thousands would believe. The baby murdering, goat torturing freakazoids that Christians and some Pagans fear so greatly are actually a very small portion of the Satanist society. They are simply more so infamous than their slightly more agreeable counterparts. Just as there are and were always cults that don't poison cool aide to commit mass suicide. It's a huge misconception that Satanists are creepy and evil for that matter.

To begin with we'll take the concept of "Lucifer". Supposedly the fallen angel of Biblical myth, the one who opposed God is actually a borrowed and sadly abused name of history. Lucifer originated long ago in a rather Pagan-like set of beliefs and held a status to his worshipers quite similar to the current concept of Christianity's Jesus. He was known best as the, "Bringer of Light" or "Bearer of Light" and savior of common sense and decency. Like many other current parts of the general Christian belief, "Lucifer" is borrowed and altered to fit the convenient role of the future Satan of vanity.

Something to understand is that Satanism is a extremely broad term, and does not successfully describe the entirety of those who belong to it. There are countless of forms of Satanism and the blood drinking creepers are only one small group.

In today's society Satanism is abused. People take the stereotypical concept of the Christian "Devil", claim to worship [him]mostly for negative attention from their peers.
This is disgraceful, not condoned.

--

There are two massive areas in Satanism, both "theistic" and "atheistic". It's pretty self explanatory--theistic is easily described as spiritual in some sense, and atheistic is easily described as non-spiritual.

These areas are of course divided into forms or groups, then divided into houses, and then doctrines.

Examples:
A common form of theistic Satanism is Luciferianism, this group typically identifies with the characteristics of Lucifer. It's the relaxed belief in the "Bearer of Light". Some have trouble accepting it as Satanism as they expect the brutality of Christian stereotypes.

A form of atheistic Satanism recently becoming one of the more popular forms is LeVayan. Based on the teachings of Anton LeVay, this is a "religion" based on common sense and endorsement of human tendencies.
'Whatever floats your boat as long as you aren't being an idiot' is the ideal in a nut-shell. People often times have issues with this form of Satanism because it's rumored that the adherents of this religion regard themselves as their own gods, that if there is a Satan then he has no power over their fate.

Another common misconception is that all of Satanism follows the Satanic Bible, typically a feared book.
This is most certainly not true.

The Satanic Bible originally written by Anton LeVay (1969 www.churchofsatan.com) is a fairly difficult book to understand on some level and takes background knowledge of basic anthropology to understand the references often made through out the book. As suggested it is basically outlining to ideas, philosophies, and beliefs used in LeVayan Satanism. It is not a guide to eating children or demons stalking your grandmother who forgot to pray to Jesus before bed.

Another one I see a lot is the idea that LeVayan satanists religiously look at themselves as gods.
The idea behind this is achieving a sense of independence from religion related lifestyle dictation. In other words, developing your own morals or at least conforming to values with motivation not regarding fear of a higher being. To my understanding LeVayans saying they are their own gods is a lot like a man telling his wife " [he]is [his]own man." As LeVayan satanism is a lot about worshiping independence and practicality that example tends to put it better for people.

To put it even more simply, LeVayan satanism is an atheistic "religion" that still might recognize entities or higher or lower power. A bit confusing but makes sense once you think about it.

Awesome, you went into the details on Theistic and Atheistic branches. Not many go into those details or have any idea what they are talking about. I'm impressed.

Quite, I very nearly became LeVayan at one point. Unfortunately there were a few of the sins that I irrevocably commit on a regular basis. lol

The LeVayan doctrine. It's damn near impossible not to sin by Christian standards, that ladies and gentlemen is why the death of the son of God helps many people sleep at night. Razz

They aren't damning, but they make a point to live by values allowing you to live your OWN life to the fullest. Which you can imagine makes sense to most LeVayan Satanists and LeVayan enthusiasts.

Quote :
1. Stupidity—The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.

2. Pretentiousness—Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.

3. Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.

4. Self-deceit—It’s in the “Nine Satanic Statements” but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!

5. Herd Conformity—That’s obvious from a Satanic stance. It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.

6. Lack of Perspective—Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.

7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies—Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.

8. Counterproductive Pride—That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.

9. Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.
